Our purpose in this document is to emphasize the necessity of university identification, to reinforce the advantages of using university marks of identity (logos) and to clarify the university’s position on the use of separate marks to identify sub-units and related organizations.

This information should improve the effectiveness of our messages and help to ensure consistency and professionalism in our institutional image.

Weber State University serves many important publics including students and potential students, the citizens of Utah, government agencies, academic institutions and professional societies, donors, alumni, sports fans and many others.

Communication materials, both printed and electronic, play an important role in operational efficiency. Publications that are well written and designed help the university to fulfill its mission with clarity and dignity.

All communication materials produced by or about Weber State University (including brochures, pamphlets, books, advertisements, posters, videos, electronic web pages, etc.) should identify the university in a clear manner.

Failure to adequately identify the university hinders effective communication. A visual link between publication contents and the university title should be easy to see.

Legal Trademarks

The marks shown here are registered as legal trademarks of Weber State University. It is important that we discontinue using the "old" marks and avoid producing new variations.

All three marks share a common structural form even though each one is designed with a specific role in mind. This gives visual unity to the set and underscores our common purpose.

University Mark (fig. A)

Bold, contemporary and dignified, the letterstrokes of the University Mark suggest a torch of enlightenment and symbolize our traditional emphasis on teaching and learning.

A. University Mark

Most widely applied–use in all situations where general university identification is required.
B. President’s Seal

Limited application–use only in situations appropriate to the ceremonial nature of this mark.
C. Athletics Mark

Widely applied–use to identify WSU’s NCAA teams and in other situations which promote athletics.
The university mark is the image workhorse that, in very broad terms, represents the entire university on stationery, publications, electronic media, signage, wearing apparel and other applications. It is easy to identify and projects a look of responsibility, clarity and confidence. It can be used alone or with the University Signature.

The university mark should replace all previous marks used for general university identification.

President’s Seal (fig. B)

This is the university’s symbol of academic excellence and should be employed with discretion so that its significance is preserved. The Seal is appropriate when marking formal university ceremonies and on texts or documents pertaining to the academic

mission of the university such as diplomas, certificates of achievement and awards for outstanding service. In every case, the seal should remind us of our educational priorities and stand for honor and rare achievement.

The president’s seal is not licensed for commercial use nor approved for other applications which are not specifically aligned with its intended purpose. Questions concerning the use of the seal

should be directed to the office of your university vice president or to the Office of Public Relations.

Athletics Mark (fig. C)

This mark represents the aggressive spirit of our intercollegiate sports teams, both men’s and women’s. It is used on uniforms, signage, and athletics stationery, publications and promotions.

The Symbol Advantage

At a minimum, clear identification means presenting the full university title. The university’s symbols provide an even greater measure of visual identification. They are bold and memorable and should be used at every opportunity – especially on materials which describe programs of study, institutional services, or the university in general and which reflect, most directly, our academic mission. Among the thousands of messages that the public consumes daily, ours gain distinctiveness and the advantage of immediate recognition when university symbols are displayed. Symbols help to ensure a consistent and easy-to-recognize institutional image that unifies all our efforts and constituencies. They provide credibility to university communications and help to reinforce standards of quality and excellence.

University marks should be presented in accordance with the graphic standards as approved by the President’s Council. Pease refer to the Guide to Graphic Standards and Printing Services, available at the Public Relations Office for an illustrated guide to the appropriate use of university marks and colors.
