Weber State University FINANCIAL AWARDS FOR ADVANCED DEGREES AND PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS No. 3-59 Rev.
Date 9-20-78

OLD VERSION

POLICY

A. Weber State University encourages its employees to seek advanced degrees and professional credentials that enhance their value and contribution to the institution.

B. In most cases, classified positions do not require advanced degrees or professional credentials. Classified employees who attain such qualifications should be encouraged to seek professional or administrative positions, if such positions are available. While financial awards for advanced degrees and professional credentials are not normally appropriate in classified positions, they may be granted in unique cases where an advanced degree or professional credential can be shown to be a necessary and valuable qualification. Such exceptions may be granted only by the president.

C. In professional/administrative and executive positions (and special classified positions as stipulated in "B" above) that can be more competently and efficiently performed by an individual with an advanced degree or professional credential, it is appropriate to grant a financial award recognizing the additional value of the individual to the institution.

D. Regular full-time faculty members who receive an advanced degree should appropriately be granted a financial award in recognition of additional value of the faculty member to the institution.

E. Financial awards must be approved by the appropriate vice president and will normally be distributed in the form of an addition to the regular salary. The amount of each financial award will be determined by the president based upon (1) the recommendation of the supervisor, (2) the level of the degree or professional credential earned, (3) consistency with previous awards for similar achievements and (4) the expected increase in proficiency and value to the institution.
