EMPLOYMENT OF STUDENTS AND YOUTH | No. 3-13 | Rev. |
| Date 8-17-77 | |||
POLICY
Departments are encouraged to arrange their employment practices to accommodate maximum
student utilization.
A. Age Limit and Qualifications
Normally, no minor under the age of 17 shall be employed if the position can be filled
by a University student or one admitted to enter the University. Under no exception
may a person employed be under the age of 16. No individual under the age of 18 may
be employed in a hazardous job involving the use of machinery or vehicles.
B. Hours of Work
1. Students should be advised that they are expected to devote two hours of outside
study for every hour they spend in the classroom and that a full 15 hour schedule implies
45 hours of study per week. If, in addition, they must seek employment, the
University suggests they work no more than an additional 25 hours, and it recommends even
fewer -- 15-20 hours.
2. Students may not work in excess of eight (8) hours per day or 40 (forty) hours per
week during the summer months and holiday periods.
C. Administration of Student Employment Load
It will be the responsibility of the individual employing the student to control the
number of hours of employment in accordance with the above policy.
D. Employment Certificate
Employment certificates for all student employees under 18 are required by those who
are not attending the University. The certificates may be secured by the student
from his/her high school principal or counselor. The certificate must be retained
by the employing department.
E. Working Conditions
Every effort should be made to avoid the placement of student employees in hazardous situations, particularly minors under the age of 18. Constant surveillance or working conditions and practices by the supervisor is required for maximum safety.
