I. POLICY

A. All staff employees shall serve a probationary period of 90 days during which time their work performance and general suitability for University employment will be carefully evaluated.  Following the completion of a satisfactory probationary periods an employee shall gain permanent status.

B. Employees who are rehired following a break in service shall serve a new probationary period, whether or not they had attained permanent status previously.

II. PROCEDURE

A. Extension of Probationary Period

1. The probationary period may be extended for 30 calendar days in those cases when recent progress indicates that with additional training and experience the employee will be successful.

2. In such cases, the Personnel Office shall be notified of such action by the appropriate supervisor.

B. Release During Probationary Period

If at any time during the probationary period the employee's performance or general suitability for University employment is found to be unsatisfactory, the employee may be released as follows:

1. During the probationary period, the department head may approve the release of an employee following consultation with the Personnel director.  A release other than for serious misconduct shall be supported by a written performance evaluation.

2. An employee who is guilty of serious misconduct shall be released following consultation between the department head and the Personnel director.

3. An employee who is released during the probationary period does not have the right to appeal the separation action, the effective date, or the reason for the action.

4. An employee who is released during the probationary period shall be given two weeks' notice.  However, if the employee is being released for cause, two weeks' notice is not required.

C. Resignation During Probationary Period

The employee may terminate employment during the probationary period without "adverse employment references" by submitting a written resignation.
