A student who requests an accommodation because of
a disability should be referred to SSD. Based upon documentation
of the disability, SSD will authorize appropriate accommodations.
SSD works closely with faculty and staff to insure that any
given accommodations is appropriate and necessary for the situation.
SSD advises students on issues related to disabilities and
higher education and provided priority registration for qualified students.

Student Advocacy and Adjustment
- Assist students in their adjustment to new and unfamiliar
living and learning situations
- Arrange for tutoring necessary for students success
- Assist students with immigration-related questions and concerns

Consultation & Outreach
- Organize orientation programs for new international
students and faculty/staff
- Present workshops and programs on international issues
to students, faculty and staff
- Organize International Student Emphasis Week &
International Student Banquet
- Assist faculty and staff with questions related to
international students
- Assist visiting faculty from other countries and their
academic departments with immigration-related questions
- Maintain an international alumni data bank

Retention Activities
- Arrange for tutoring necessary for students success
- Search for scholarships and other financial support for
ethnic minority students
- Assist students in identifying, applying for and securing
summer internships
- Assist students in identifying, applying to, and gaining
entrance to graduate school
Recruitment Activities
- Annual Multicultural Youth Conference on the WSU campus
- Invitations to top ethnic minority students to visit WSU campus
- Campus visits organized for ethnic minority students
- Visits to high schools and junior colleges to meet and
recruit ethnic minority students
Student Advocacy
- Address cultural barriers in the learning process
- Provide training in interpersonal skills and the competence
to function in a cultural environment different from that of
the student
- Appropriate departmental referrals for personal, career,
psychological and financial concerns
- Ethnic & Cultural Leadership retreats for ethnic minority students
- Proactively educate the campus and local community in
the awareness and appreciation of ethnic and cultural differences

Programs and services are aimed at empowering individuals
to strengthen and utilize all educational, interpersonal and
leadership opportunities available at Weber State University.
- Individual consultation and advisement, mentoring,
support groups and practicum/intern opportunities.
- Individual assessment of student needs and referral to
all pertinent student services and community resources.
- Scholarship assistance
- The Community Resource Fair - an opportunity for campus
and community to come together to learn of resources for women.
- Wisdom on Wednesday - weekly workshops provided during
the noon hour.
- Sexual Assault Awareness Month focuses on workshops,
guest speakers, class presentations and community/campus outreach.
- Women's History Month - activities and programs
developed with a special emphasis on women past and present.
- P.E.E.R. - a student volunteer program dedicated to
increasing awareness of sexual assault in the WSU and local community.

Nontraditional Student Programs provides educational
and social programs and resources to help students balance
college, work and family. Programs are directed toward students who are
25 and older, who have children, or who are married.

About Upward Bound Program
- Funded by federal grants to help low-income/first
generation high school students from Davis and Weber counties prepare
for higher education
- Designed to provide a pre-college educational experience
for selected high school students in Davis and Weber Counties
- Students must meet the federal guidelines set by the
Department of Education in order to participate
- Serve approximately 75 students annually from five area
high schools: Ben Lomond, Ogden, Clearfield, Layton and Northridge
- Program purpose is to increase the number of
non-traditional students who enter and graduate from college
Academic Year Programming
- Tutorial instruction in literature, composition, foreign
languages, mathematics, history, computer enhancement training
and general science courses in an after school setting at the five
target high schools
- Saturday morning study hall
- Individual counseling for students with personal or
academic concerns
- Monthly social, cultural and recreational activities
- ACT preparation
Six-Week Summer Residential Program
- Upward Bound offers a summer academic enhancement
program held on the campus of Weber State University
- Students live in the residence halls, attend enrichment classes
and participate in social, cultural and recreational activities

Services for Veteran Students is the liaison between Weber
State University and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
for educational benefits for veterans and dependents who are
eligible for the G.I. Bill. In addition, Services for Veteran Students
provides a variety of support services to assist in making education
a successful experience for veterans.

- Provides benefits application assistance, certification for
payment and problem resolution with the U.S. Department of
Veterans Affairs
- Provides individual educational assessment, advisement
and program planning
- Provides a veterans advocacy center at Weber State University
- Provides a social focus for BBQ's, lectures, etc.
Academic Enhancement Services
- Provides assistance in choosing a degree program leading to
a career
- Coordinates campus services to assist in the assessment of
and providing for academic needs, assistance with course
planning, selection and registration
- Helps veterans and their dependents identify sources of
support for their educational needs

Veterans Upward Bound provides qualified veterans
academic support services that assist them in developing the academic
skills necessary to be successful in their post-secondary
education experience.

- Coordinates with all campus services and activities for services
for veteran students
Academic Skills Development, Advisement & Assistance
- Short-term remedial courses
- Structured classes at Salt Lake Community College,
Redwood Road Campus, South Campus, and Weber State University
- Admissions, financial aid and career advisement
- Assistance in securing support from available resources such
as the Veterans Administration, veterans associations and
various state and local agencies serving veterans
